Charles "Chuck" Delaney ist seit November 2023 bei MINDA North America als Sales Manager tätig. Nach einer Einarbeitungszeit in unserer Niederlassung in North Carolina, verbrachte Chuck zwei Wochen in Deutschland, um unseren Hauptsitz in Minden, unseren Standort in Stadthagen und einige MINDA Installationen bei Kunden in Deutschland und Österreich kennenzulernen. Wir freuen uns, Chuck im Team MINDA begrüßen zu dürfen!

Das Training beginnt  

Mit meiner Einstellung zum Sales Manager - West für MINDA North America war es mir wichtig, dass ich die Technologie und die Kultur von MINDA kennenlerne. Ich habe ein dreiwöchiges Training bei MINDA begonnen, zunächst an unserem nordamerikanischen Standort und später in Deutschland, wo unser Unternehmen gegründet wurde. MINDA ist viel mehr als ein Anlagenbauer. MINDA ist ein Team von Experten, die die Bedürfnisse jedes Projekts analysieren und unsere Vertriebsmitarbeiter, Projektingenieure, Projektmanager und Fertigungsmitarbeiter einsetzen, um einzigartige Lösungen für die individuellen Anforderungen unserer Kunden zu entwickeln.   

Mein Training hat sich bisher auf die Details konzentriert, wie MINDA jedes Projekt von der Planung bis zur Inbetriebnahme und dem Service angeht. Wir sind ein technologieorientiertes Unternehmen, das Remote-Meetings zum Beispiel über Microsoft Teams nutzt, um die Kommunikation zwischen unseren jeweiligen Standorten auf einfache Weise zu ermöglichen. Aber wir legen auch großen Wert auf den persönlichen Austausch, um die internen Prozesse besser zu verstehen.   

Kennenlernen des Teams 

Meine Reise bei MINDA begann mit der Teilnahme an der Mass Timber Conference in Portland, OR, im  März 2023. Auf dieser Konferenz trafen sich die besten Vertreter der Holzindustrie, um die Herstellung und Entwicklung von Anlagen für die Produktion von Massivholzprodukten wie Brettschichtholz und Brettsperrholz in Nordamerika voranzutreiben. Bei einem Rundgang durch die Ausstellung wurde ich auf MINDA aufmerksam.  

Ich traf mich mit Charles Martin, dem Geschäftsführer von MINDA Nordamerika, und Andreas Rudolf, dem Timber Vertriebsleiter in Deutschland, über Microsoft Teams. Als wir ein Verständnis für meine Fähigkeiten und die des Unternehmens MINDA entwickelten, kamen wir Anfang Oktober 2023 überein, dass ich Teil des Teams werden würde. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt begann mein Training.   

MINDA Nordamerika  

Ich reiste von Bend, OR, zu unserem nordamerikanischen Standort in Granite Falls, NC. Hier traf ich John McLean, Vertriebsleiter, und Wayne Barrett, Vertriebsingenieur. Zusammen mit Charles Martin haben sie mich durch einige unserer aktuellen Projekte geführt, von der Konzeptplanung, bis zur Vertragsverhandlung. MINDA macht sich ein einzigartiges Verständnis von Prozessen und Technologien zunutze, um Projektlösungen von Anfang bis Ende zu entwickeln und zu produzieren. Ich konnte nicht nur den allgemeinen Prozess beobachten, sondern auch die Softwarelösungen kennenlernen, die wir für die Durchführung unserer Projekte einsetzen.  

MINDA North America verfügt über eigene Fertigungskapazitäten zur Entwicklung und Umsetzung von Projektlösungen. Während meines Aufenthalts in North Carolina konnte ich den Abschluss von Fertigungsschritten und den Versand eines Großauftrags in der Automobilindustrie beobachten.   

Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wurde mein Training mit einer geplanten zweiwöchigen Reise zum MINDA-Hauptsitz in Minden, Deutschland, fortgesetzt. 

Verbindungen zwischen MINDA North America und Europa  

North Carolina ist seit jeher das Zentrum für die Entwicklung und den Verkauf von Anlagen für die Holzindustrie in Nordamerika, und zwar aufgrund seiner historischen Verbindung zur Möbelindustrie. Europa war der wichtigste Innovator für Herstellungsanlagen in dieser Branche. Folglich gibt es ausgezeichnete Flugverbindungen zwischen Charlotte, NC und Europa.   

Treffen mit dem Team am Stammsitz in Minden 

Nachdem ich bei MINDA im Industriegebiet von Minden angekommen war, traf ich mich mit den Vertriebs- und Marketingmitarbeitern, unseren Projektmanagern und Projektingenieuren der Timber-Abteilung des Unternehmens. Ich hatte auch die Möglichkeit, Robert und Eberhard Falch kennenzulernen.  

Ich erhielt eine Führung durch die Mindener Büros und Produktionshallen. MINDA beschäftigt u.a. Maschinenbauingenieure, Elektroingenieure und Fertigungsmitarbeiter, die Stahl in hochmoderne Anlagen umwandeln, die in der Massivholz- und anderen Industrien eingesetzt werden.  

Mein Training in der ersten Woche konzentrierte sich auf tägliche Lerneinheiten über die europäische Herstellung von Brettschichtholz und CLT. 

Produktionsstätte Stadthagen  

Am Ende der ersten Woche in Deutschland besuchten wir den MINDA Standort in Stadthagen, wo die Stahlverarbeitung mit Laserkantteilfertigung stattfindet und u.a. CLT- und Brettschichtholzpressen gefertigt werden. Wir sahen eine CLT-Presse, die für die Auslieferung Anfang 2024 bereitstand. Außerdem sahen wir in Stadthagen eine TimberPress T100. 

MINDA-Produkte live 

Für die zweite Woche war eine Reise zu mehreren Unternehmen geplant. Ich reiste zusammen mit den Kollegen Jan Deppermann und Nikolaj Tschernischow zu drei Betrieben in Österreich und Bayern, die MINDA-Anlagen in ihren Produktionsstätten eingesetzt haben:   

Beim Besuch des ersten Kunden wurden wir von einem Vertreter von Obel-P, einem Hersteller von Hochfrequenz-Leimholzpressen, und unserem Handelsvertreter begleitet, der für Frankreich und französischsprachige Kunden zuständig ist. Der Zweck dieses Besuchs war es, die HF-Presse im Betrieb für eine geplante Anlage zu zeigen. Wir beobachteten den Betrieb des Pressenbereichs und die besonderen Merkmale dieser Presse, einschließlich der automatischen Energiesparmaßnahmen und der Möglichkeiten zur Überwachung der Leimtemperatur. Dies ist die gleiche Anlage, die wir für eine amerikanische Leimholzfabrik vorschlagen werden.   

Anschließend reisten wir zu einem Werk für Brettsperrholz nach Bayern / Deutschland. MINDA hat hier umfangreiche Anlagenkomponenten geliefert.  

Unsere Reise ging dann zu einem großen Hersteller von Leimbindern. Dort werden die Balken für eine Brücke über einen 130 Meter langen Bahnhof mit Kurven in zwei Achsen hergestellt. MINDA hat die Anlagentechnik zur Verfügung gestellt, die für die Herstellung der Lamellen benötigt wird, die dann verpresst werden. 

Zusammenfassung 

Zum Abschluss meiner zweiwöchigen Ausbildung traf ich mich mit Jan, Nicolaj und Andreas, um einen Vorschlag für Nordamerika zu erarbeiten und die nächsten Schritte für mich und MINDA Nordamerika zu besprechen.   

An meinem letzten Abend in Deutschland genossen wir ein kulinarisches Teamevent mit dem gesamten Timber Team und Kollegen aus den Abteilungen Vertrieb und Projektierung, Produktion, Auftragsabwicklung und Marketing.   

Meine Zeit bei MINDA in Deutschland war sehr produktiv und hat es mir ermöglicht, meine Kollegen im Timber-Team kennenzulernen, unsere Fähigkeiten in der Fertigung zu sehen und unsere Produkte an ausgewählten Produktionsstandorten in Deutschland und Österreich im Einsatz zu sehen. MINDA ist wirklich ein Technologieführer für maßgeschneiderte Produktionsanlagen für verleimte Holzbauprodukte. 

Ich bin schon jetzt stolz darauf, Teil des #teamminda zu sein!

Starting with MINDA  

Charles "Chuck" Delaney joined MINDA North America in November 2023 as Sales Manager for the Western Region. After initial training at our North Carolina location, Chuck spent two weeks in Germany, getting to know our headquarters in Minden, our location in Stadthagen and some MINDA installations at customers in Germany and Austria. We were happy to welcome Chuck to Team MINDA!

The Training Begins 

With my appointment as Sales Manager – West for MINDA North America, it is essential that I understand the technology and culture of the MINDA organization. I have embarked on three weeks of training with MINDA starting in our North America Headquarters and later in Germany where our company was founded. MINDA is much more than a product line of equipment, it is a team of experts who analyze the needs of each project and apply our sales staff, project engineers, project managers and fabrication staff to create unique solutions to our customers’ needs.  

My training has so far focused on the details of how MINDA approaches each project from concept to execution. We are a technology driven company which utilizes remote meeting through Microsoft Teams to stay in communication between our respective locations, but also highly value the use of in person experience to better understand the processes needed to ensure success.  

Meeting the Team 

I began my journey with MINDA by attending the Mass Timber Conference in Portland, OR last March. This conference brings together the best representatives of the wood products industries to develop and promote the architectural wood products of Cross Laminated Timber, Mass Plywood and Glulam beams for North America. In touring the exhibition, I became aware of MINDA. 

I had meetings with Charles Martin, North America President, and Andreas Rudolf MINDA Sales Director residing in Germany via Microsoft Teams. As we developed an understanding of my capabilities and that of MINDA as a company, we reached an agreement in early October that I would become a part of the team. At this point my training began in earnest.  

MINDA North America 

I traveled from my remote location in Bend, OR to our North American headquarters located in Granite Falls, NC. Here I met John McLean, Sales, and Wayne Barrett, Sales Engineer. Along with Charles, they have guided me through some of our current projects from concept to budgetary proposal and from there to contract negotiation. MINDA utilizes our unique understanding of process and technology to develop and track project solutions from start to finish. Not only did I get to observe the general process, but I was also able to utilize the software solutions we employ to make these projects work. 

MINDA North America has its own fabrication capabilities to develop and implement project solutions. I was able to observe the completion of fabrication steps and the shipment of a large order in the automotive industry during my stay in North Carolina.  

At this point, my training continued with a scheduled trip for two weeks to MINDA world Headquarters in Minden, Germany.  

Connections between MINDA North America and Europe:  

North Carolina has historically been the center of equipment development and sales in North America for the wood industries, from its historic association with the furniture industry. Europe has been the major innovator for processing equipment in this industry. As a result, there are excellent connections by air between Charlotte, NC and Europe.  

Meeting the Team at World Headquarters 

After I arrived at MINDA in the industrial area of Minden I met with the Sales and Marketing staff, our Project Managers and Project Engineers in the Timber division of the company. I was also able to meet with the current and past owners of the company.  

I was given a tour of the Minden offices and fabrication facilities. MINDA has a staff of Mechanical Engineers, Electrical Engineers and fabrication personnel who take raw steel and convert it into cutting edge machine centers which are used in the Mass Timber and other industries. 

My training the first week was focused on daily learning sessions about European manufacturing operations of Glulam beams and CLT, both from the standpoint of operations and the layout of the facilities.  

Stadthagen Manufacturing Facility 

On the end of week 1 in Germany, we visited the MINDA manufacturing plant in Stadthagen, where steel fabrication using laser cutters is performed and the manufacture of our CLT and Glulam presses as well as material transport and assembly equipment. We saw a 300 Series CLT press which is fully assembled and staged for delivery at the first of the year. Also, at Stadthagen, we saw a TimberPress T100 Glulam press which is also for the same installation. 

Travel to see the MINDA products in action 

A trip to several Mass Timber operations was planned for the second week. I travelled with Jan Deppermann and Nikolaj Tschernischow to visit three Mass Timber facilities in Austria and Bavaria that have used MINDA equipment in their manufacturing operations:  

Visiting the first customer we were accompanied by a representative from Obel-P, a manufacturer of High Frequency Glulam presses and our sales representative who covers France and French speaking customers. The purpose here was to show the HF press in operation for a proposed installation. We observed the operation of the press area and the distinctive features of this press including automatic energy savings provisions and glue line temperature monitoring capabilities. This is the same equipment we will be proposing for an American glulam manufacturing site.  

We then travelled to a Cross Laminated Timber plant to Bavaria / Germany. The plant uses a vacuum press to manufacture a small number of CLT panels a day. MINDA has provided the equipment needed up to the layup of the panels and included all the steps in preparation of the lamellas and then to lay the panels up in the vacuum press and then unload the completed panels for machining using a vacuum lifting gantry. The lamellas also travel towards Glulam manufacturing in the same factory.  

Our travels then went to a large custom manufacturer of Glulams up to 2 meters x 2 meters in size. They are producing the beams for a bridge over a rail yard spanning 130 meters and with curves in two axes. MINDA has provided the equipment needed to produce the lamellas which are then cold pressed on their own production presses.  

Wrapping up 

My two weeks of training concluded with follow-up meetings on a proposal for North America with Jan, Nicolaj and Andreas and discussions on next steps for myself and for MINDA North America.  

On my last evening in Germany, we enjoyed a culinary team event with the whole Timber Team and colleagues from the departments Sales and Project Planning, Mechanical Engineering, Production, Order Processing and Marketing.  

My time with MINDA in Germany has been very productive and has allowed me to familiarize myself with my counterparts within the Timber team, to see our capabilities in manufacturing and to actually see our products in use at selected manufacturing sites in Germany and Austria. MINDA truly is a technology leader with extensive knowledge of what is needed to efficiently manufacture equipment to support the Mass Timber market.
